Indian Firecycle: Douglas Aircraft’s Dispatch Tow Fire Motorcycle
This customized Indian Firecycle appeared in the February 1947 issue of Popular Science, but it was not a factory Indian model. It was a special-purpose conversion built around a standard Indian Dispatch Tow and used by Douglas Aircraft Company at its El Segundo, California facility.
The idea was simple: a full-size fire truck could not easily work its way through the narrow aisles and confined spaces of a large aircraft manufacturing plant. A motorcycle-based fire unit could get closer, faster, and with less room to maneuver.
A Firecycle for an Aircraft Factory
Douglas Aircraft’s El Segundo plant was exactly the kind of place where a compact emergency vehicle made sense. Aircraft production buildings could be crowded with assembly lines, tooling, parts, and equipment. In that setting, speed was not only about horsepower. It was also about reaching a small fire before it became a large one.
The Indian Firecycle gave Douglas a small, mobile fire-fighting machine that could move where a standard fire truck could not. It was still a motorcycle at heart, but its purpose was industrial. The same fast-response idea also shows up in the Navy firecycles at Floyd Bennett Field, where a Harley VL and modified Indian three-wheeler were adapted for airfield use. Instead of carrying tools, cargo, or a tow bar for service-station work, this machine carried extinguishers for quick response inside the plant.
What the Indian Firecycle Carried
The extinguisher loadout is one of the best documented parts of the machine. The Firecycle was outfitted with two 30 lb Du-gas extinguishers, two 15 lb carbon-dioxide extinguishers, and two 2 lb carbon-dioxide extinguishers.
That combination gave the rider several options without turning the machine into a heavy fire apparatus. The large Du-gas bottles provided the main fire-fighting capacity, while the smaller carbon-dioxide extinguishers could be grabbed quickly for smaller or more localized fires. It was a practical conversion for a factory floor, not a showpiece.
The Indian Dispatch Tow Chassis
The base was a standard Indian Dispatch Tow, Indian’s three-wheeled utility machine built around Scout mechanicals. The Dispatch Tow used a 45 cubic inch Scout side-valve V-twin motor and was originally intended for practical work rather than sport riding.
That utility background made the Dispatch Tow a logical platform for the Douglas conversion. Indian motorcycles had already been adapted for specialized jobs, including experimental mail-carrier work, and the Dispatch Tow pushed that idea further by giving the motorcycle a stable three-wheel layout for service use.
Not a Factory Indian Fire Model
The name “Firecycle” can make the machine sound like a cataloged Indian model, but the evidence points to a one-off Douglas Aircraft conversion. Indian supplied the Dispatch Tow platform. Douglas turned it into a compact fire-fighting unit for its own plant.
That distinction matters because the Firecycle belongs more to the history of industrial problem-solving than to Indian’s normal production lineup. It was not a new model family, and it should not be treated the same way as a standard Scout, Chief, or factory utility machine. It was a customized Dispatch Tow adapted to one very specific job.
A Small Service-Machine Oddity
The Firecycle sits in the same general world as other working service machines: motorcycles adapted for police departments, military units, factories, delivery work, and emergency use. Its closest Harley-Davidson counterpart was not a fire motorcycle so much as Harley’s longer-lived servi-car, which served a much broader market over many more years, though municipal fire-department Harleys filled the same quick-response role in a more public setting.
The Indian Firecycle was narrower in purpose and far rarer in documentation. Its story survives because Popular Science noticed an unusual machine doing a practical job inside an aircraft plant. For a motorcycle built to reach tight spaces with fire extinguishers, that may be exactly the right kind of legacy.
