1966–1969 Harley-Davidson Generator Shovelhead Model & Production Reference

This page documents Harley-Davidson motorcycles built from 1966 through 1969, covering the Generator Shovelhead big twins, FL and FLH models, police FLH variants, and the final years of Harley-Davidson’s engine-stamped VIN era. These years close out the pre-1970 identification system, making accurate year-by-year reference essential for identification and restoration.

How to use this page: use the year links above to navigate to a specific production year, review model listings and production changes, then use the Harley VIN Decoder and Model Reference 1903–1969 to connect engine numbers, model families, and full production context across all eras.

Overview

The Generator Shovelhead era begins in 1966 with the introduction of the Shovelhead top end, replacing the Panhead design while retaining the existing generator-based electrical system and much of the earlier big-twin architecture. These years still use the engine-stamped VIN system that defines the earlier Harley-Davidson reference pages. For the preceding OHV platform, see the 1948–1965 Panhead era. Beginning in 1970, Harley-Davidson transitions into a more complex identification and platform period, so 1966–1969 works as a clean closing chapter to the engine-VIN era.

VIN Information

Generator Shovelhead-era engine numbers follow the same year-first format used throughout the earlier Harley-Davidson VIN system. The stamped number identifies the production year and engine family, but not every final motorcycle configuration. As with Panhead and Knucklehead models, police and equipment distinctions are not always fully represented in the stamped VIN, so the VIN should be used as a starting point rather than a complete model description. For complete engine number decoding, see the Harley-Davidson VIN decoder and serial number guide. To place decoded motorcycles within the full range of production, use the Harley-Davidson Model Reference 1903–1969.

  • FL and FLH remain the primary big-twin model designations, with police FLH variants still part of the broader factory model picture.

Production Numbers

  • FL / FLH — 7,111
