Riding On the Homefront During WWII


This photo is part of a small collection of photos taken by the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner in 1940.  The subject was female war workers and the three ladies pictured above were employed as motorbike messengers for the Timm Aircraft Corporation.  Their job was to carry inter-organization communications from the company's headquarters in LA to the three manufacturing plants.  Pictured from left to right are Chief Messenger Phyllis Domich, Dora "Babe" Duncan, and Janet Spangenberg.  Together they are said to be the first female motorbike messengers for the aircraft industry.
